Both Sweden and Denmark boast a myriad of designated cycling routes which we take advantage of on this unique trip. Castles (or slots as they are known in Denmark) are in abundance including Kokkedal Castle which is now a luxurious 5-star hotel that we spend two nights at. Visit the Norrviken Gardens, created by Rudolf Abelin in 1905 as a living garden museum. An optional add-on loop takes you to Frederiksborg Castle, a palatial complex built as a royal residence for King IV of Denmark. Or, after a short transfer to Helsingor, ride north along the coast to Esrun to visit a Cistercian abbey from 1140, restored in 1996 and now a national historic monument with museum and cafe. A longer option reaches the charming sea-side village of Gilleleje, looping back through the interior and past the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, the most visited art museum in Denmark, with works by Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol, David Hockney and others. Tour Reviews
“Four trips with Great Explorations and they have all been great. Dinners were all very good, I felt we got a really good feel for what the locals like to eat. Always top notch equipment.”
“It was a very relaxing trip. The bike rides were easier than expected with beautiful rural scenery. The cooler temperatures were nice. We love the small market and store outside of Torkov; along with the quirky sheep shack. The summer castle tour was excellent and kept us out of the rain. The hotels were excellent.”
