Le Centenaire, Les Eyzies
Once a member of the Relais & Chateaux group, this boutique hotel has lost its pretension and is now a boutique hotel with large guest rooms, inviting lounges, and impressive grounds and swimming pool.
We first started coming to this region in the early 1980’s, attracted by quiet country roads to bike and wonderful scenery, with castles seemingly around every corner; the Dordogne retains this charm and now has superb hotels and restaurants. In addition, the prehistoric caves of Font de Gaume & Lascaux, and pilgrimage site of Rocamadour and others make this a unique place in all of the world.

Getting There
Most participants will spend an evening in Bordeaux and transfer to Les Eyzies on the 10h50 train the morning of Day 1 (you can also reach Les Eyzies from Paris through Limoges on an 8:15 train). We have recommendations for excellent hotels in the historical district of Bordeaux.
Les Eyzies
Our trip starts from Les Eyzies which is easily reached from Bordeaux by train. We’ll meet at 12:40 p.m. on arrival of the 10:50 a.m. Bordeaux train at the Les Eyzies train station and cycle to Campagne for lunch at a local bistrot. The villages of le Bugue and Limeuil (members of the ‘most beautiful villages in France’) will provide a wonderful introduction to the region. Les Eyzies is where the first discoveries of Homo sapiens were made. We’ll visit the prehistory museum and Fonte de Gaume, where cave paintings from 12,000 B.C. can be seen.
Distance: 35 up to 60 km; 470 m gain
Les Eyzies
On our second day of cycling, we’ll trace the Vezere River northward, perhaps with a visit to one of the extraordinary underground grottes famous in the area.
Distance D2: 34 up to 50 km, elevation gain up to 850 m.*
La Roque Gageac
The Dordogne has castles throughout the region and we’ve designed our cycling route to pass by the most impressive. We’ll visit the Château de Castelnau, built 1000 years ago and still majestic in its appearance and Les Milandes, where the actress Josephine Baker lived with her adopted children until 1964.
Distance: 34 km; 360 m gain or 50 km; 850 m gain
La Roque Gageac
Reaching Sarlat, the impeccably restored Renaissance town, we’ll enjoy a walking tour. La Roque Gageac, one of the ‘plus jolis villages de France’, boasts a wonderful hotel situated at the river’s edge.
Distance: 24 km; 190 m gain or 80 km; 740 m gain
Rocamadour
The ride to Rocamadour is nothing short of spectacular as we ride up onto escarpments and down through lush valleys, following the Dordogne river. We’ll have lunch in Souillac before continuing on to Rocamadour, one of the most famous pilgrimage sites in France.
Distance: 38 km; 750 m gain or 58 km; 1,115 m gain
Rocamadour
On our final day of riding we’ll explore Antoir, Loubressac and perhaps Carennac, which has the largest bicycle museum in France. Back in Rocamadour we’ll celebrate at a local restaurant to toast our week together.
Distance: 52 km; 760 m gain

Tour Reviews
“Even better than I expected. Thank you for all the fabulous memories! The region was absolutely gorgeous – everywhere I looked was a picture postcard. The hotels were the very best in each area we stayed. Loved our place in Rocamadour, Les Eyzies was great too. Every meal was better than the one before. You chose the very best places for us. Thank heavens we were cycling to wear off all the fabulous food!”
The Dordogne region is one of pastoral beauty and is made even better by the lack of traffic and the historical sites along the way. This bike trip is so satisfying visually and physically. There are so many beautiful places and things to see, and the meals and accommodations are over the top.
This tour was quite honestly the most fun I have ever had on a vacation! Cycling was a fabulous way to explore a region in a
way that I would otherwise not have been able to. A great opportunity to bond with my mom without either of us needing to
carry the weight of travel logistics.
This was our first bike trip of this kind. The guides were very flexible and accommodating and worked with everyone to honor each cyclists abilities and interests. We had a wonderful time and are looking forward to choosing a trip for next year !
“Very well organized trip in beautiful countryside. The guides were excellent and fun. The hotels were first class. The food was great. The region is beautiful and historically fascinating. The routes chosen were scenically gorgeous with low traffic.”
“We loved the trip. It was our first international cycling trip so we appreciated that everything was taken care of and all we had to do was show up! The areas we cycled in were beautiful, gorgeous and dramatic! The guides were professional and fun! The raptor show was interesting and tour of the Lascaux cave a highlight. The hotels were great and the dinners were all very good. Our Travel Advisor was very responsive and helpful.”
“At all stages of the process, Great Explorations has shown itself to be very professional, accommodating and responsive. The tour of the Lascaux caves was exceptional. The two guides were exceptional, very good company, knowledgeable and always ensured the details of the trip were attended to quietly and efficiently.”
