From Hotels to Yachts: How Our Cycling Tours in Croatia Evolved

We began operating cycling trips in Croatia more than twenty years ago, at a time when the Dalmatian coast was still something of a well-kept secret. From the outset, we carefully crafted an itinerary that journeyed from Dubrovnik to Split, weaving through the sun-drenched Dalmatian Islands of Mljet, Korčula, Hvar, and Brač. It did not take long for this route to emerge as one of our most beloved trips worldwide. The reasons were obvious: breathtaking coastal scenery, quiet and beautifully engineered roads that seem purpose-built for cycling, and a remarkable concentration of cultural and historical treasures at every turn.

The Start of Hotel-Based Trips

Over the years, our hotel-based trips have featured a thoughtfully curated collection of accommodations, ranging from charming traditional inns to refined, upmarket seaside hotels. All are located directly on the water, many boasting swimming pools and amenities that consistently impress our guests. At the Luxe-level, properties such as the Podstine Hotel on Hvar and the five-star Puteus Palace on Brač rank among the finest hotels we use anywhere in Europe, offering exceptional comfort, service, and a strong sense of place. Travel between islands has always been seamless, with private boats — often traditional wooden gulets — and faster vessels used where appropriate to maximize both comfort and time on shore.

Introducing Yacht-Based Trips

In 2018, an exciting new chapter began when I met the captain of a stunning yacht designed to accommodate 18 guests in nine spacious cabins, supported by a professional crew of six. I was immediately struck not only by the elegance of the vessel, but by the possibilities it opened up. Chartering a private yacht allowed Great Explorations to offer something entirely different: the freedom to anchor in secluded coves, the ability to access the remote and captivating island of Vis, and the opportunity to explore parts of other islands that aren’t as easily reached on a hotel-based itinerary. That first yacht-based departure exceeded every expectation. Our guests were unequivocal in their enthusiasm, and the following year we expanded our fleet to include additional yachts of comparable luxury.

A few years later, working closely with our trusted yacht broker, we were offered two more vessels that are among the most luxurious charter yachts of their size anywhere in the Mediterranean. These now form our Deluxe category, elevating the experience even further with generously sized ensuite cabins, onboard hot tubs and saunas, extended inflatable swim platforms, and a level of service that rivals the finest boutique hotels.

To be clear, our hotel-based cycling trips in Croatia remain a superb experience, and I am confident that the accommodations will meet and exceed your expectations. Several hotels are guaranteed to elicit a genuine “wow.” However, if you have a group of 12 to 21 friends or family members, and are seeking a truly extraordinary way to experience Croatia, our luxury yacht itineraries offer an unforgettable alternative and one that will astonish you and your entire group, both on land and at sea.

Choosing the Right Yacht and the Right Time

Today, we offer a small collection of yachts designed to accommodate groups of 12, 16, 18, or 21 guests, depending on the vessel. Each yacht has its own character, layout, and amenities, and detailed information on cabins, decks, crew, and onboard features can be found in the individual yacht brochures.

The questions we are asked most often are, “Which yacht should we book and when should we go?” I usually answer by saying that, for most people, the Luxe-level yachts are sufficiently impressive, comfortable, and luxurious. Everyone who has traveled on one of these yachts on our trips has loved them.

The Deluxe-level yachts are a step up, with amenities such as larger guest cabins, more toys (inflatable docks, etc.), hot tubs, and additional crew. I have been on each level of yacht and had the opportunity to be on each of our Deluxe yachts this fall. Every one of them is truly extraordinary, and from your first step onboard, you will be in awe — take a virtual tour and see for yourself.

As for timing, the sweet spots are May, June, September, and into the third week of October, when the weather is ideal and the islands are at their most inviting. Because these yachts are in high demand and often book out a year in advance, we recommend reserving as soon as your dates are set.

Our itineraries are about far more than the yachts themselves. They are shaped by the cycling — quiet coastal roads, dramatic island landscapes, and rides designed to showcase the very best of the region — as well as by cultural encounters, local guides, and experiences that reveal another side of Croatia. Whether you choose a hotel-based trip or a yacht-based trip, the goal is the same: to experience the Dalmatian coast in a way that feels thoughtful, immersive, and unforgettable.
