Vuelta 2018, Biking

Tour with the Pros

This will be one of the most exciting years for the Vuelta in 2018 with 3 summit finishes in four days in the final week. With the final week’s stages location, we have decided to incorporate the best cycling in Catalonia with this year’s tour including overnight stops in Figueres, Calella de Palafrugell and Girona. We will see 3 stages live including the stage finish in Lleida and the two most exciting stages of the 2018 Tour - challenging climbs in the Pyrenees Andorra where we will have the chance to ride the same route as the pros, choosing to watch at idyllic locations. This is the year to ride the Vuelta and Great Explorations will have you front and centre for the action.

Only Great Explorations:

  • Small groups, extraordinary guides, and authentic experiences.
  • A ride you will never forget: each and every day
  • The opportunity to order off the menu at restaurants you won't find in guidebooks.
  • We design and operate our own trips so there are only good surprises.
  • live viewing on 3 stages

Getting there :
You can fly into and out of Barcelona. There is a direct train from Barcelona to Figueres.

DAY 1 (Sep 9): Figueres

Our formal meeting time is at 7 pm but for those that arrive early, we will have a warm-up ride, leaving at 4 pm. Figueres is a lovely town, birthplace of Salvador Dali and much more. We’ll have dinner at a favourite restaurant in the center. Hotel Duran, Figueres

Ride Distance: 48 km; 300 m

DAY 2 (Sep 10): Figueres

Today, we’ll ride a loop east to Peralada and then up to the Romanesque monastery of Sant Pere de  Rodes and on to Cadaques, an unspoiled  and remote village with crystal-blue water, fishing boats, sandy beaches, and old white-washed houses. Back in Figueres, walk the narrow,  twisting streets and dine in one of  many excellent restaurants in town.

Hotel Duran, Figueres

Ride Distance: 92 km; 1000 gain

DAY 3 (Sep 11): Callela de Palafrugell
Riding south from Figueres, you will have a chance to visit Empuries, founded in 575BC. Lunch is recommended in the medieval city of Torroella de Montgri at a restaurant that has been in the same family for five generations. Then it is on to Pals and Calella de Palafrugell, a a                                                seaside village with lots of charm. Hotel Mediterani, Callela de Palafrugell
Ride Distance: 72 km; 380 m; optional 41 km; 820 m extra

DAY 4 (Sep 12): Girona

Ride to Girona, one of the most beautiful cities in Spain, where professional cyclists often live and train off-season (attracted by the climate and

food, just like us). Stop to visit the castle that Dali lived at in Pubol and to have lunch before a wee climb over the Mare de Deu dels Angels before descending into Girona. We will enjoy a walking tour of the city, to learn the many treasures here before dinner. Ciutat de Girona, Girona

Ride Distance: 88km; 760m

DAY 5 (Sep 13): Stage 18 - Ejea de los Caballeros to Lleida 180.5 km

Time to join the Vuelta! The stage on this day is flat so it will be up to the sprinters to position themselves for the finish in Lleida. We will transfer to Lleida by train at 9:11, arriving at 10:57 (1h46) and ride a loop that will have us back in town in time for the finish; for those that wish to pre-ride part of the Stage 19 you can do so all the way to Oliana, where we will stay at Hotel Cal Petit, on the Stage 19 route.

Ride Distance: 60; 80; 100 km options

DAY 6 (Sep 14): Stage 19 - Lleida to  Andorra  157  km

With our strategic position in Oliana, we have time to ride the stage route towards Andorra, ahead of the pros. For those with the legs and courage, tackle the col de la Rabasa (2,015m). Over 50 professional cyclists make their home in Andorra. After the finish, we will ride to our 4-star Andorra Park Hotel.

Ride Distance: 70 km; 1800 m gain

DAY 7 (Sep 15): Stage 20 - Escaldes-Engordany to Col de la Gallina & Santuario de Canolich 105 km

This is the toughest stage of the Tour with six classified climbs, culminating with 16-18 per cent switchbacks at the summit of Col de la Gallina. It is known as Andorra’s hardest climb and it should provide a dramatic conclusion to the 2018 Tour. You can, of course, choose an easier route for yourself from our suggested options. Andorra Park Hotel
Ride Distance: 105 km; options

DAY 8 (Sep 16):

Stage 21 - Alcorcon to Madrid - 112 km - not watching

Depart for onward travel. Coach transfers to Barcelona are included. Depart at 8:15 arriving at 12:00 noon or depart at 11:15 arriving 1:15.

Note: This is a preliminary itinerary which will be updated as further route information becomes public. Hotels used on the trip are representative of those we will use. Any changes made will be done with the goal of making the trip the best that we can given available hotels, services etc.
On our Tour with the Pros trips, we generally try to provide options to cycle 60 km, 80 km or 100+ km on each cycling day. Although anyone of moderate cycling level may enjoy this tour, it is ideally suited to those with intermediate to advanced fitness levels. By this we mean you should be able to cycle 60 km at a minimum with some hills. If you have any questions about this trip, please consult our Travel Advisors.
