Sicily, Biking

Described as the Mediterranean’s most alluring island with sweeping olive-strewn landscapes, starkly beautiful Greek temples and Byzantine mosaics, this island in the sun offers outstanding food and culture and interesting cycling routes. Our itinerary includes overnight stops near Vizzini, Ragusa, Modica and Noto, staying in charming and authentic lodging. Be prepared for some climbing and the reward of sweeping descents, along coastlines and through villages that throw out the welcome to visitors, especially those on bikes. Need inspiration? Getting there:
It makes most sense to fly into Catania. We will pick-up at the Catania airport at 11:00 am and Catania centre at 11:30. After a lovely lunch, we are off on bikes!

DAY 1:
After shuttling from Catania, and lunch, we will ride a loop with time to stop in the village of Vizzini, considered one of the oldest cities in Sicily, ruled in the middle ages by aristocratic families and today a vibrant village with restaurants and cafes to enjoy. Back at the hotel, enjoy a swim in the large swimming pool and then welcome reception and dinner at the restaurant here. Distance: 40 km; 700m gain

DAY 2:
Vizzini loop to Grammichele
Today, we set off for the nearby village of Grammichele, which was heavily damaged in an earthquake in 1693 and redesigned and rebuilt. A longer option reaches Caltagirone, famous for ceramics. On the return route, we will stop in the village of Mineo for a late afternoon refreshment before reaching the hotel. On this night, we transfer into town for a fun local evening. Distance: 44 km; 530m or 80 km; 1400m or 100km; 1800m

DAY 3:

Vizzini to Ragusa Ibla
We will ride from Vizzini south to Licodia Eubea, Lake Dirillo and Villagio Gulfi (with a visit to its winery) to Ragusa Ibla, and its historic center. This charming village is filled with baroque palazzi on handsome plazas. We stay at the San Girogio Palace Hotel, steps from cafes, shops and excellent restaurants. Distance: 55 km; 800m gain

DAY 4:

Ragusa loop to Donnalucata, Scili and Modica:
Leaving Ragusa, we will cycle towards the coast and the charming village and splendid beaches of Donnalucata. On the return ride, we will stop for lunch in Scicli, a Unesco-listed Baroque town with abandoned cave settlements. Finish the day with a a climb to (yet another) Unesco listed city of Modica where we stay at the fabulous 4 star Palazzo Failla hotel. Modica is another impressive & lovely city, this one famous for the many chocolate makers including Antica Dolceria Bonajuto, where we have a private tour and tasting. Distance: 60 km; 950 m gain (shorter option available also)

DAY 5:

Modica to Noto

We will cross the interior of Sicily on roads lined with orchards and farms, stopping to visit an olive oil farm and enjoy an alfresco picnic. Our hotel is an upscale agriturismo - iescape describes it as 'The 19th-century farmhouse is built around a baglio (courtyard), with an old olive tree providing shade. The reception, restaurant and breakfast room are off this central space, with the accommodation in newly built blocks across the lawn. Modern edges are softened by the dusky pink colour of the walls and the jasmine, honeysuckle and rose plants climbing up the sides. Across the lawn is the beautiful infinity pool: semi-circular and surrounded by sun loungers shaded by olive trees. You're in the depths of nature, with Sicily's most spectacular river gorge and one of her loveliest Baroque towns both on your doorstep. Take a swim (two pools including wellness centre), and relax prior to dinner.
Distance: 52 km; 880 m gain

DAY 6:
Noto Loop to Marzamemi
On today’s loop ride, we will cycle south towards the coast to some of the most secluded sandy beaches not just in Sicily but in all of Italy. We will visit the sea-side village of Marzamemi. Take a swim, enjoy lunch at the atmospheric Traverna La Cialoma, or if you prefer to sun-bathe at an exclusive beach, head to Agua Beach Resort and then ride through the National Park Vindicari. Noto is described by many as their favourite hill-town in Sicily including Conde Naste Traveler who describe Noto: “In contrast to big European cities during the summer, this region of southern Italy has all the history of Rome along with the small-town breezy seaside charm of the Cinque Terre.”
Distance: 48 km; 800 m gain or 79 km; 845 m gain

DAY 7: Depart from Noto to Syracuse (by 9:30 am) or Catania airport (by 10 am). This transfer is included in your trip.
