Rising from the ashes

RAILS TO TRAILS - One of the casualties of the 2003 forest fires around Kelowna, in British Columbia's Okanagan Valley, was the historic railway trestle bridges that formed part of the Trans Canada Trail for hiking and biking. Well, there's great news: Not only are the forests and wildflowers recovering, but the trestles through Myra Canyon on the old Kettle Valley Railway have been rebuilt and will once again be open to cyclists and hikers this summer.

From June 15 to 28, Great Explorations, a Vancouver-based company, is offering a three-stage Trail Event of the entire Kettle Valley section of the Trans Canada Trail, starting in Castlegar and ending in Hope. Guests can sign on for any one of the three stages, or choose to do the route in its entirety.

Festivities are planned along the way to make the trip even more special, including the arrival at Myra Canyon on its re-opening day, which is scheduled for June 22. Other trips will be operating in July, August and September.
